A native of Kenilworth, Illinois, Greg started playing piano at the age of five, but found his true musical love when he began playing percussion in the fourth grade. Within two years he had started playing the drum set, the instrument he would make his life’s work. Greg began developing a varied musical resume in high school, playing in jazz ensembles, orchestras, wind ensembles, choirs, and pit orchestras. During his senior year Greg was a member of the IMEA Honors Jazz Combo, making him the top high school jazz drummer in the state of Illinois.
After graduating from high school he moved to Los Angeles and started attending the
University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. At USC he continued to
develop and hone his musical chops under the guidance of teachers such as Peter Erskine,
Aaron Serfaty, Bob Mintzer, Alan Pasqua, and Jason Goldman. Greg also became a
mentor in the Thornton Outreach Program, teaching private lessons, sectionals, other
classes about jazz and the drums, and student coordinating the 2013-2015 Drum Days.
During his senior year of college, Greg was a member of Flights of Horus, a finalist in
the 2014 Angel City Jazz Competition.
After graduating magna cum laude from USC with a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies,
Greg moved to Chicago in order to continue his professional music career. Greg has
performed with a number of great musicians, such as Jeff Coffin, Steve Davis, Seamus
Blake, Katisse Buckingham, and Bob Mintzer. He has also been fortunate enough to
study with Bret Sher, Rich Thompson, Dennis Mackrel, Clay Jenkins, Jeff Campbell, Joel
Spencer, Peter Erskine, and Aaron Serfaty.
